Remember when backyard grills were just a rusty grate over a fire pit?

I was at my uncle's place in Ohio last summer and he still cooks on this old cinder block setup he built in the 80s. It made me realize how crazy we've gotten with all these $800 stainless steel grills and pellet smokers, when a simple fire still does the job. Anyone else miss the old way of just throwing some charcoal in a pit and calling it good?

Read somewhere that the first "modern" charcoal grill was just a half barrel someone cut in half with some legs welded on. Funny how we've circled back to gas grills with more knobs than my car's dashboard, but a handful of coals and some smoke still wins every time.

Bet someone's uncle out there is still using that hubcap as his main grill. Just fires it up on the driveway like it's totally normal.

My uncle once grilled hot dogs on a hubcap during a camping trip. Weirdly good.
