Saw a guy in Tempe build a whole fire pit area out of free pallets and now I'm rethinking my $600 plan
I was at my cousin's place in Tempe last weekend and his neighbor had a backyard setup that blew my mind. Dude built a full fire pit area with seating using pallets he grabbed for free behind a hardware store on Rural Road. He lined the pit with leftover cinder blocks and topped the seats with cushions from a thrift store, total spend was under $40. I had been quoted $600 for a paver kit and was about to pull the trigger, but watching his setup hold up through a whole evening of people sitting on it got me thinking. He said the trick was sanding every board and hitting them with two coats of outdoor stain, then he anchored the frames with lag bolts so nothing wobbles. My wife is not sold on the pallet look but I keep telling her it's the same wood as a deck, just cheaper. Has anyone here built seating out of pallets and did it last more than a couple summers?
