Talked to a landscaper who said my turf was killing the soil underneath

Was out front last week and this guy who runs a native plant crew in Austin stopped to look at my lawn. He said those rolled out grass mats create a dead zone underneath after a couple years. No air, no bugs, nothing. He wasnt being rude about it, just matter of fact. I got a soil probe and dug down 4 inches and he was right. Just lifeless clay. Made me wonder if the whole perfect green lawn thing is just a look and not actually good for anything. Has anyone here ripped out their turf for something that actually helps the ground?

Man, that hits close to home - I've seen the same thing under lawns I've dug up.

Man, that hits close to home" - yep, that's basically my life motto when I dig up any yard. I swear every shovel full of dirt reveals another surprise, usually a rusty soda can from 1995 or a weird pipe I'm too scared to look at too close. At this point I'm half convinced my whole yard is just a landfill with grass on top and I'm just here to keep uncovering my own trash.

Yeah that's basically every house built before 2000.
