The eaves trough comment that made me redo my rain barrel setup

Last week my neighbor was helping me level a new shed pad and he looked at my rain barrel, laughed, and said "youre just collecting roof crud with that thing." He pointed out my downspout dumps straight into the top screen, so all the pine needles and shingle grit sit right there and clog the hose inlet every few weeks. I went online and found a simple first flush diverter kit for about $40, plus a 2 foot stand pipe that settles the junk before it reaches the barrel. Took me a Saturday afternoon to swap it in, and now the water comes out clear instead of brownish. Didnt realize how much sediment I was feeding my garden beds, and my drip line clogged twice last summer because of it. Anyone else pipe their downspout into a settling chamber or just run the straight barrel and fight the gunk every month?
