The pavers I laid 3 summers ago finally told me the truth
When we built the patio in 2021, I skimped on the base and just threw sand down. Last week a big section sank by the grill area, and my neighbor Phil said he noticed it leaning back in May. I dug it up this weekend and sure enough, the sand had washed out under the edges. Anyone else try to shortcut the base layer and pay for it down the road? I'm debating whether to redo the whole thing or just patch that corner.

Good lord, three summers and it held up that long? That's honestly better than I would have expected from just sand. I've seen people try that and have trouble within the first winter, so you got lucky for a while. But yeah, the base is everything. I learned that lesson the hard way too, patching never really works out in my experience. You're probably better off biting the bullet and redoing the whole thing now, because that corner is just going to keep sinking and take the rest down with it eventually.
