Tried putting down a cheap tarp under my gravel path and now I have a weed explosion

I laid down a basic $15 tarp from the hardware store last spring to stop weeds under my 3-foot wide path, but now it's just trapping moisture and the weeds are growing right through it. Has anyone else had this happen or is there a better barrier material I should try?

That tarp just holds water and creates a perfect little greenhouse for seeds to sprout. Feels like every time we try to save a buck we end up creating a bigger problem down the road, doesn't it?

Not to mention I'm now the proud owner of the most expensive weed farm in the county, @rowan_thomas84. I figure if I just leave it long enough I might break even on the investment in a decade or two. At least the neighbors have stopped asking to borrow my tools.
