Update: My block's debate over patio covers is getting heated

A few houses down, someone put up a big, solid roof over their patio. Now, some neighbors say it blocks sunlight and looks too closed in. Others argue it's great for shade and privacy during summer gatherings. I see both points but worry it might start a trend that changes how our yards feel. Where do you stand on permanent covers versus open spaces?

Yeah we had this exact fight on my street last year. @milesk27 is right, once one goes up it feels like everyone needs one for privacy and it just changes the whole feel. What worked for us was pushing for a rule like hollyl25 mentioned, but for slatted wood covers. Lets light and air through, gives some shade, and doesn't mess up drainage. It stopped the solid roof trend before it got going.

Lol at the "closed in" feeling, that's my same worry. My own patio solution is a sad tarp that looks so bad it probably keeps neighbors from copying me.

My cousin's HOA had to make a rule after three houses built solid patio covers. They found that drainage problems got WAY worse because rain runoff was blocked. Now they only allow covers that let some light through and don't change water flow.

Remember when my street had this exact fight a few years back. Someone put up a huge covered patio that felt like a wall at the end of their yard. It really does make the whole block feel more closed in and dark. I totally get your worry about it starting a trend, because once a few go up, others follow just to keep their privacy. I'm with you on liking open spaces over permanent covers.
