A regular told me my fades were "clean but boring" and it stung for a month
So I started asking every guy what look he was actually going for before I touched the clippers, and now I spend an extra 3 minutes on the consult instead of jumping straight to the 1 guard, which cuts down on the "shorten the top too" requests halfway through. Any of you do a full consult on walk-ins, or just regulars?
Learned that lesson the hard way too, except mine was a guy who sat down, said nothing, then got mad when I took the sides tight because he wanted to keep some weight there. Now I ask two questions before the cape even goes on, what are we doing today and how do you usually wear it, and that tells me almost everything. It costs me a couple minutes on a busy Saturday and yeah sometimes the line backs up, but a rushed cut that gets fixed for free costs way more than that. Walk-ins get the same two questions, no exceptions, because half of them don't know the words for what they want until you ask them straight. Three minutes up front saves me ten minutes of arguing with a mirror and a guy who keeps saying "a little more off the top" while I already know he's gonna hate it.
