Client told me my fades were too "soft" - here is what I changed

A guy in his 40s sat down and said my fades looked like I was scared to go high enough. I started using a 1.5 guard instead of blending with a 2 and it made a huge difference. Anyone else get feedback that made you totally rework your technique?

A 1.5 guard on a man in his 40s? I'd be scared to take that much off.

Is it really that different from just buzzing it down with no guard though? I mean, I feel like if you're thinning on top the length just makes it more obvious. Maybe it's just me but once you commit to the shave you kind of have to go all the way, right?

Used to be on your side with this, completely. Would buzz it down to nothing and call it a day. But a barber buddy talked me into a 1.5 guard once and it actually softened the whole look, made the thinning less harsh against the sides. @paul_taylor21 probably has a point about being careful with that length, but for me it bridged the gap between "I give up" and "I'm still trying." Saw a guy the other day with a similar cut and his crown area wasn't screaming for attention the way a full bare shave does. Your mileage may vary, but it changed my mind after years of going all the way.
