Had a client sit in my chair for 45 minutes without saying a single word

Guy came in last Friday, pointed at a picture of a fade, and just stared at the mirror the whole time I cut, so I asked if everything was okay and he finally said "been a rough week" and that's when I learned to read people's silence better than their requests.

10 months ago I had this lady come in, she didn't talk for the first 20 minutes then just started crying while I was doing her hair. Turns out her dog had just passed away the night before. Some people just need a quiet space where nobody's pushing them to talk.

Gotta say this hits different when you think about it from the dogs perspective too lol. Like that dog probably knew exactly who to go to for comfort, even if it couldn't talk. Hair appointments are so intimate, you're literally touching someone's head for an hour. Makes sense that people let their guard down there. Bet that lady will remember you for the rest of her life just for not pushing her to talk.

Having a dog die is brutal. When my old lab passed I just sat in my car for like 20 minutes before I could even drive home. A quiet, safe place where nobody's expecting you to perform or explain yourself is exactly what you need in that moment.
