Shoutout to the barber in Charlotte who showed me a better way to handle a double crown

I had a guy come in yesterday with a really pronounced double crown, and my usual fade technique just wasn't blending it right, leaving a weird patch that took me almost 45 minutes to fix. He was super patient, and another barber from a shop across town happened to be waiting and walked me through using a longer guard and shear-over-comb to soften the transition. What's your go-to method for tricky crown patterns like that?

Always used to fight double crowns with clippers and got frustrated. That shear-over-comb trick with a longer guard is a total game changer for blending. Makes the whole process way less stressful.

Wait, is that why my double crown always looked like two tiny tornadoes had a fight on my head? I tried just clippers for years and it was a total mess. This shear-over-comb thing sounds way smarter than my old method of just hoping it would lay flat. I might have to finally admit I need to learn some actual technique.

That shear-over-comb trick is solid, but @rose_reed, calling it a "longer guard" might confuse some folks. You're really just using the comb to lift the hair away from the head before cutting. It's more about the technique than the guard length.

Oh man, I've been there. That feeling when you're staring at a stubborn double crown and the clock is ticking - it's stressful for everyone involved. My go-to is to start with a 2 guard but barely touch the crown area, then switch to a 1.5 to feather the edges. The real key is to hold the comb at a 45 degree angle and cut with the direction the hair grows, not against it. I also have good luck with texturizing shears on the very top of the crown to break up that heavy line. Once you get the hang of it, those tricky crowns actually become one of the most satisfying parts of a haircut to dial in.
