Talking with a barber at a shop in Brooklyn made me rethink hot towel shaves
He said hot towels dry out the skin more than they help, and after trying cold towels for a week I gotta admit my clients' post-shave redness dropped by half. Anyone else find cold prep works better?

Is it just me or does that kind of apply to everything nowadays? Like cold showers for waking up, cold brew for coffee not being as bitter. Seems like we all got brainwashed into thinking hot was better for everything. I switched to cold water for washing my face a few months back and my skin stopped peeling in winter. Sometimes the simple stuff works better than what everyone says is the pro way to do things.

Started using cold water rinses at home after reading something similar a few years back. My face used to get all red and tight after shaving with hot towels, but switching to cold prep changed everything. I soak a washcloth in cold tap water, wring it out, and hold it against my beard for about a minute before lathering up. The shave feels smoother and my skin calms down way faster after. It sounds backwards but the cold keeps the pores from getting shocked and irritated.

@knight.dylan man you are SPOT ON with this. I had the same problem with hot water making my skin super red and bumpy after shaving. What really helped me was switching to a cold water splash right before I put on the shaving cream. I just cup my hands under the cold tap and press it against my face a few times. It wakes everything up and my razor glides way better. No more angry skin afterwards.
