Tried using a cheap trimmer on a client and instantly regretted it

Last Saturday a guy came in asking for a quick lineup and I grabbed my backup Wahl 20 dollar trimmer instead of my Gamma+ Pro. It pulled his beard hairs so bad he jumped out of the chair and I had to comp his whole cut. Has anyone else had a tool swap go that wrong?

Did you check the blade tension before you used it? In my experience those budget trimmers usually come way too tight from the factory which causes all that pulling and snagging. A quick half turn on the tension screw and some oil usually makes a world of difference.

Oh man, that's the worst feeling when a tool betrays you in front of a client. I gotta kinda push back on @wren638 though cause even with oil and adjustment those cheap Wahl trimmers just don't hold up the same way under real use. A little maintenance helps but the motor and blade gap on those budget models just aren't built for pulling thick beard hair all day.

Respectfully, I see it a little different. A cheap trimmer can still work fine if the blades are oiled and adjusted right (most people skip that step). Sounds like that backup tool just needed some maintenance before it ever touched a paying client.
