Update: My texture trick that goes against the grain
Lots of barbers swear by thinning shears, but I get better results using just my regular scissors (seriously, it works). I do a light, pointed snip at the ends which blends things without that chopped-up look.

Oh interesting, I read an article a while back about some barbers who totally avoid thinning shears. They said it can make hair look frizzy and weak over time, especially on certain hair types. Your pointed snip method sounds like it gives that piecey texture without wrecking the hair's health. Makes a lot of sense when you put it that way.

My old barber blamed thinning shears for my frizz, @thomas_hill22.

My stylist switched to texturizing scissors, same idea but safer.

That article Thomas mentioned is spot on. Thinning shears basically crush the hair shaft, which can lead to split ends and that weird, fuzzy halo effect. The pointed scissor method is more like a surgical cut, removing bulk without damaging the structure. It's why some high-end barbers charge extra for scissor-over-comb work instead of just reaching for the thinning shears. You get a cleaner, healthier finish that grows out better.
