Customer yesterday told me his brakes just needed 'a little squeeze'

Guy rolls in with pads worn down to the metal, rotors scored to hell. Says he's been riding like that for 2 months because the squealing 'went away'. Had a conversation with him about how that sound disappearing is actually way worse. Made me realize I need to explain warning signs better instead of just fixing and sending people out. Any of you experienced riders who ignored a sound and regretted it?

Found a $5 tool that fixes stripped spoke nipples

Been fighting a stuck spoke nipple on a customer's old Schwinn for 20 minutes, tried all my usual tricks with no luck. Grabbed a cheap spoke nipple driver from the bottom of my toolbox that I never use, and it grabbed the rounded nipple on the first try. Anyone else hold onto random tools that end up saving you hours?

The day I fixed a bike with a zip tie and a prayer

Last Tuesday I had this rusty old commuter come in where the derailleur cable snapped mid-shift. I didn't have the right size in stock, so I rigged it with a zip tie to hold the tension just enough to get the guy home. He rode out the door, made it three blocks, and the zip tie held until he hit a pothole near 5th Street. The look he gave me when he walked back in was priceless, but I learned to always double check my supply before promising anything. Anyone else ever bodged a fix that worked way better than it should have?

Just switched to heat shrink over electrical tape for cable housing ends

For years I used electrical tape to finish off cable housing ends on builds. You know, just a quick wrap to keep them from fraying. But about 6 months ago I read a post on here about using heat shrink tubing instead. I picked up a pack of assorted sizes from the local hardware store for like 8 bucks. Now I cut the housing, slide the heat shrink on before installing everything, then hit it with a lighter. It looks so much cleaner and I haven't had a single cable end start to split since. Plus it takes less time than wrapping tape around each one. Has anyone else made this swap and noticed a difference with dirt getting into the housing?

I swapped to a torque wrench after a frame crack in Denver
