A customer brought in a 1980s Peugeot with a stuck seatpost last month.

I tried the usual tricks like ammonia and a bench vise, but it wouldn't budge. My old boss from the shop in Portland said to try a mixture of automatic transmission fluid and acetone. I let it soak for two full days, and it came out with just a few taps from a mallet. Has anyone else had luck with that mix on really old steel frames?

Is it really that big of a deal though?

That "old mechanic's trick" idea makes me wonder, @victor_robinson. A lot of those tricks came from a time when parts were simpler and you had to improvise. The real skill was knowing which tricks were safe for the car long-term and which ones were just a quick fix that could cause more trouble later.
