Chain snapped on a rural climb near Boone, now I pack a spare link

I was 11 miles out on the Blue Ridge Parkway last month when my chain let go right at the steepest pitch, and after walking two miles to a gas station, I realized I never carried a quick link, so has anyone else had good luck with the reusable ones or do you just replace the chain on the spot?

That "walking two miles to a gas station" part really hit home for me. I remember reading somewhere that most chain failures happen right when you're cranking hardest, which is exactly what you described. I started carrying one of those reusable quick links after a buddy of mine snapped his chain on a gravel road and had to get a ride from a farmer. I've used the same link like three times now and it's held up fine, but I always replace the chain when I get home anyway. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like the reusable ones are a good backup, not a permanent fix. Definitely better than walking though, that's for sure.
