Learned the hard way about cheap cables last week
I've been building bikes out of my garage for about a year now and always used those generic 4 dollar shift cables from Amazon. Swapped to Jagwire Pro cables on my buddy's recommendation and instantly felt the difference in how smooth the shifting is on my commuter bike here in Denver. The cheap ones would get this weird roughness after about 200 miles but the Jagwire set is still buttery after 2 months. Anyone else notice a huge gap between budget and mid-range cable sets?

Now that you mention it @the_elliot, getting the housing ends filed clean made way more difference than any cable brand I tried too. I use a little Dremel to smooth mine out and the cheap Amazon cables have been working fine ever since.

Has anyone checked if your cable housing ends are cut square? That was the real game changer for me. I filed my shift cable ports flat with a tiny file and the difference was bigger than switching cable brands. Even the cheap cables felt way smoother after I stopped crushing the housing ends with crappy cutters.
