Left my coffee on the bench and a 9 speed chain dropped right in it. Drank it anyway.
Last Tuesday I was doing a tune up rush at the shop on 4th street and had my mug sitting right next to the parts tray like an idiot. Went to flip the bike on the stand, bumped the tray, and a freshly degreased 9 speed chain slid straight into my coffee. I fished it out with a spoke, stared at it for a second, and took a sip because we had 6 bikes due by 5pm and I was not making another pot. Tasted like chain lube and regret but honestly the worst part was the black grit at the bottom of the mug. Cleaned it out with dish soap twice and it still smells faintly like Tri-Flow. Has anyone else done something this dumb during a busy tune up day, or am I the only one who needs a lid on my mug?
Buddy of mine did the same thing but with a bowl of cereal and a cassette. He was eating breakfast at the bench, set the bowl down to true a wheel, and the cassette slipped off the hub and sank straight in. He said the milk turned gray and the worst part was finding a little bearing ball at the bottom after. He tossed his mug too, the smell never came out.
Its always the stuff sitting right next to the work that gets ruined, never the stuff on the shelf. Same thing happens in kitchens, someone leaves a drink by the prep station and boom, someone's knife hand knocks it into the flour bin. The real lesson here is that a busy day makes you skip the small stuff that saves you later, like grabbing a lid or moving your mug three feet to the left. You were already running on fumes at that point, so of course you drank it, thats just what happens when you're racing a deadline and your brain picks the fastest option. I bet the mug still smells weird because that Tri-Flow gets into the plastic or ceramic pores and just lives there forever.
