My first full rear wheel rebuild after 3 years of shop work finally held true

Last Monday I laced up an old Deore hub to a Sun Rhyno Lite rim using a cheap truing stand from Craigslist, and it rolled perfectly straight on the first try, so has anyone else found that dishing a wheel on a shoelace between fork blades actually works better than some of the fancy tools I've seen?

Three years in a shop and you're bragging about a first try on a shoelace? I mean, cool, but a truing stand from Craigslist still beats a shoelace for dish, unless you're just checking if the rim is close. The fork blade trick works fine for a quick eyeball, but it's not gonna tell you if the hub is centered in the frame. I've seen guys do the string method and then wonder why the tire rubs the chainstay. Your build might be straight, but that's luck more than the method being better than a proper gauge.
