Remember when bottom brackets were simple?

Honestly, I was rebuilding an old 90s mountain bike last week and it hit me how much bottom brackets have changed. Back then you just needed a lockring tool and a crank puller, and you could swap a square taper in 10 minutes. Now with all these press-fit standards and different spindle sizes, I spend more time checking compatibility than actually turning a wrench. Has anyone else noticed newer riders getting confused when they bring in a bike with an old-school threaded BB?

Yeah I've been noticing that everywhere honestly. Simple stuff keeps getting replaced with complicated versions that don't really work better. Same thing happened with coffee makers and toaster ovens.

Hard disagree that it's that serious. If you've got a square taper on a 90s bike, you're still ten minutes and a $10 tool swap away from rolling. The confusion mostly comes from people who don't bother reading a spec sheet before buying parts. I've seen new riders figure out press-fit and T47 in an afternoon with a YouTube video and a coffee. And honestly, how many bottom brackets are you really swapping in a lifetime? Maybe three or four if you're not abusing the thing. The old stuff was simple because it was old, not because it was better.

Funny you mention that, because I actually went through the same thing trying to help a friend rebuild his dad's old Trek. We were both scratching our heads for an hour because none of the modern BB tools fit right. What finally worked was just sticking with the original square taper and getting a proper crank puller from a local shop that had been sitting around since the 90s. After that, it was smooth sailing and he had the whole thing swapped in under 15 minutes. Sometimes the old way is just the better way for those older frames. Have you found any modern tools that actually make the press fit stuff easier to deal with?
