Serious question, has anyone else noticed a huge jump in how long a chain lasts after a simple change?
For years, I'd just wipe the chain down with a rag and re-lube it. Last fall, I started using a proper degreaser and a chain cleaning tool before every lube. The chain on my daily commuter used to stretch to the 0.75% mark in about 500 miles. Now, after 800 miles on this new routine, it's still measuring under 0.5% wear. The difference is just the ten extra minutes of cleaning. What's your go-to method for getting a chain really clean before oiling?

Ever notice how the right prep work makes everything last longer? It's like cleaning a pan before you cook, you just get a better result. That ten minutes with the degreaser probably gets all the old grit out so the new lube can actually do its job. I bet the old way was just mixing fresh oil with abrasive gunk. My go-to is the simple park tool chain cleaner with citrus degreaser, it's messy but it works. Makes total sense your chain is holding up way better now.

Man, @parkerbrown, I used to just add more lube but you're totally right about cleaning it first.

My old method was just adding lube until the chain sounded like a bag of gravel being shaken. I figured the noise was normal. Turns out I was basically making a grinding paste and paying for new cassettes way too often. The first time I actually cleaned it, I was shocked by the black sludge that came out. It's a humbling experience when you realize your maintenance was making things worse.

Oh man, this reminds me of an article I read a while back. It said a dirty chain actually wears out your gears way faster, not just the chain itself. All that grit acts like sandpaper on the metal parts. So cleaning it isn't just about making the lube work better, it's saving your whole drive train. That totally changed how I see it. Now that ten minutes of messy cleaning feels like a real investment.
