Showerthought: The time a guy tried to pay me with a bag of old bike parts

Years back, a fellow tried to settle his bill with a pile of worn-out gears and links. That kind of trade happened more often before, but these days it's all cards and apps. What's the strangest thing someone's offered you for repair work?

At least it wasn't a bag of mismatched socks. Hope those parts were for the exact bike you were fixing.

Actually, reminds me of the time I ordered a specific cassette tool for my old ten speed and the mail showed up with some generic bike pump instead. Ended up having to duct tape the pump to a wrench to get enough leverage, which worked until the tape gave out halfway through. Funny how wrong parts can lead to weird fixes. You ever have to make something work with totally the wrong tool?

Robin628 makes a good point I used to disagree with.

Hah, a bag of bike parts is almost useful. I got offered a half-eaten birthday cake once, like the frosting was all smushed from the car ride over. At least I could throw the parts in a scrap bin, that cake just went straight in the trash.
