Swapped to wax-based lube on my chain last winter and got way more gunk buildup than with my old wet lube

I figured it would keep things cleaner based on what everyone says online, but Oklahoma road salt and slush turned that wax into a gritty paste that wore out my cassette in 4 months, has anyone else found wax lube useless in actual winter conditions?

Did you pre-treat your chain before switching to the wax? Because if there was any leftover factory grease or old oil in the links, the wax won't bond right and just peels off. That gritty paste you're describing sounds like the wax grabbing onto road salt and not the chain itself. I run wax year round in the Pacific Northwest where it's damp and dirty, but I have to strip the chain completely clean with mineral spirits first or it turns into a mess like yours. Oklahoma slush is a whole different beast though, that sounds brutal on any lube.

Wait, are you telling me I was supposed to scrub my chain like a surgical instrument before throwing wax on it? @hollyl25 sounds like a pro who's got their whole wax routine down to a science while I'm out here making artisanal chain paste in the Oklahoma slush.
