The shop owner's 'just chase the cable' advice finally clicked for me

Had a sticky rear derailleur on a customer's bike, spent 20 minutes fiddling with limit screws and spring tension. Old guy who runs the shop down the street happened to walk by, said 'stop overthinking it, just chase the cable from the shifter to the mech and see where it hangs up.' Sure enough, the housing was kinked right where it enters the frame guide near the bottom bracket. Replaced 6 inches of housing, shifted perfect. I've been doing this 5 years and always jump to the fancy stuff first. Anyone else have that one basic troubleshooting habit they swear by now?

The same thing happens with my washing machine when it acts up. I'll start thinking about the motor or the control board, then my husband will just open the back panel and find a sock stuck in the drain pump. It's always the simple thing you look past because you're sure it's something complicated. That's just how brains work I guess, we skip the boring answer and go straight to the scary one.

Notice how the same thing happens when people worry about their health or their car, they jump straight to worst case scenarios before checking the obvious stuff like sleep or tire pressure. @nancyj11 hit it perfectly, our brains are wired to seek out drama over routine fixes because the boring answer feels like it shouldn't be the right one. It's almost like we're scared that if the simple solution works, we wasted all that time panicking for nothing.
