Unpopular opinion: shops that reuse brake cable housing are setting people up for sketchy stops
I had a customer come in last Tuesday with a rear brake that felt like mush no matter how much I cranked the barrel adjuster, and it turned out the previous shop just swapped the inner cable and left the old housing on. There were two kinks near the bend by the seat stay and rust inside the liner, so the cable was dragging the whole way. I get that new housing costs like $8 to $12 and takes an extra 10 minutes to cut and file, and some folks say the old stuff is fine if it still slides. But I have pulled too many housings where the ferrule was crushed or the liner was chewed up, and the rider had no idea their brakes were that bad. So which is it, replace housing every cable swap or only when it looks bad?
