Hit 50 shows finished this year and it kinda messed with my head

I was scrolling my watchlist on Letterboxd last night and realized I've completed exactly 50 full series in 2024. That includes everything from an 8 season drama to a 3 episode crime doc. It made me wonder if I'm just avoiding real life or if this is normal for people who work physical jobs and just need to shut their brain off at night. Has anyone else counted their total and gotten surprised by the number?

I just read an article about how people who work physical jobs actually watch more TV than office workers because their bodies are tired but their brains aren't fully shut off yet. 50 shows is a lot though, I remember seeing something about how the average person finishes maybe 15-20 series a year and that already sounds like a lot to me. But then again I'll put on a 10 episode season and finish it in two nights without even realizing it. Maybe it's not about avoiding life, maybe it's just that streaming makes it too easy to click next episode before your brain catches up with what you just watched.

Fifty shows is a lot but I see a bigger pattern here with how our downtime has changed. We used to have natural breaks between activities like commuting or cooking or just sitting on the porch. Now everything is designed to fill every empty moment with content. Your body is wiped from work but your mind hasn't learned how to power down on its own so you reach for the remote. It's the same reason people scroll their phones for an hour before bed instead of just laying there. Our brains got used to constant stimulation and now we have to trick them into relaxing with more stimulation. It's not avoidance it's just the way modern life has rewired our normal off switch.

Set a timer for thirty minutes before bed and just sit there doing nothing.
