PSA: Always thought family shows were too sweet, but a binge changed that

I used to skip any show about relatives because they seemed fake and perfect. Then I watched one about a mom and her teenagers dealing with daily mess. The fights over chores and money felt just like my house. It made me see that family stories can be real and interesting. Now I'm hooked on finding more shows like it.

Convinced my friend to try one after she said the same thing. She ended up calling me last week to rant about a scene that was exactly like her dad.

Seeing your own life played back in media is a weird experience. @miller.rowan, did your friend's rant lead to any actual conversations with her dad? Those parallels can force some awkward talks.

I used to roll my eyes at people who said TV could be real like that... but a documentary about a family business last year hit way too close to home. It showed a dad and daughter arguing over paint colors for a client's house, which was almost word for word a fight I had with my own dad on a job. We ended up talking about it later that night.

Funny you mention that, my sister and I finally watched a show about two brothers fighting over their dad's old truck (sounds boring, I know). There was this whole scene about splitting repair costs that was way too close to our last big argument. Kind of like what @miller.rowan said, it actually made us talk it out for real after seeing it play out on screen.
