Showerthought: I used to hate true crime docs until the Jinx sucked me in

A buddy of mine kept pushing The Jinx on me for months and I always said I couldn't do the whole murder thing. Last Tuesday I had nothing else to watch so I put on episode one and ended up binging all 6 episodes before my Saturday shift. Did anyone else get completely hooked by a genre you swore you'd never watch?

@mary_west you are exactly right, I swore off murder stuff too until The Jinx made me a hypocrite.

Oh man, same thing happened to me but with Making a Murderer. I always thought true crime was just gross and exploitative, but my sister put it on during a visit and I couldn't look away. Ended up watching the whole thing in two days and then fell down a rabbit hole of similar shows. The Jinx was next for me too, and that one really got me because the guy basically confessed on tape without realizing it. Now I pretty much watch anything that pops up in that genre, even the cheesy ones on Discovery Plus.

Is it weird how mainstream media tricked us into thinking we were too good for something that's really just human curiosity?
