My cousin's waitress comment made me rethink tipping for good

Last Saturday at a diner in Akron, my cousin said she tips 30% because servers remember faces, and she gets better tables for it. I always figured tips were just charity or obligation, but watching her get refills before asking while I sat ignored made it click. She told me it's a down payment on future service, not a thank you for the past one. That hit different because I've been tipping the same 18% for a decade and never saw a benefit. Has anyone else tested whether bigger tips actually change how staff treat you, or is it all in our heads?

Wait, are you sure you want to trade your money for a slightly warmer cup of coffee next time? That's basically what you're doing when you tip like that, you're paying extra just to skip the line on normal service that everyone should get anyway. I mean, think about it, if servers start picking favorites based on tips, then the system is already broken, and you're just feeding into it by playing along. And honestly, how do you even know it's the tip and not just your cousin being a regular, or the server just having a good day? You're basically paying for a maybe, and that's a pretty expensive gamble when the last time you got a bad table, you probably still tipped your usual 18% and just got mad about it.
