One blunt comment about my hike planning changed everything I do now

I used to plan every trail down to the mile and what snacks I packed. Last spring on the AT near Damascus, a thru-hiker looked at my spreadsheet and said 'you're gonna burn out before noon with that pace.' I got defensive at first, but they were right. I was treating a day hike like a military operation. I cut my planned distances by a third and started building in rest stops and buffer time. Now I finish feeling good instead of wrecked, and I actually notice the views. Has anyone else had a stranger's offhand comment stick with them like that?

Mileage creep gets me every time. I'll start with buffer built in, then slowly pack more trail in until I'm back to racing the sunset. Takes one rough day to snap me back though.

Wonder if that spreadsheet mindset still sneaks back on bigger trips?
