Realized I was over-washing my dogs after a golden retriever owner called me out

For about 3 years I was washing every dog that came into my shop with a full degrease shampoo, even the little yorkies that just rolled in grass. This one lady with a golden retriever asked why her dog's coat felt so rough after I groomed him, and I told her it was normal. She came back a month later with pictures of her dog scratching more than usual and said another groomer told her I was stripping the natural oils. That hit me hard because I thought I was being thorough, not harmful. Now I use a gentle shampoo for most dogs unless they are actually greasy or have skin issues, and the coats have gotten way softer. Has anyone else had that moment where a customer pointed out something obvious that you completely missed in your own routine?

Did you try switching to a mild shampoo and see the difference right away?

Oh boy, I feel this. I once asked a client if their dog was part seal because it was so greasy, only to find out I was the one stripping all the good oils out.
