The $4 flea market wrench that beat my $200 socket set

I bought a beat-up old combination wrench at a flea market in Dayton for four bucks, and it fit a rusted bolt my expensive set couldn't grip without slipping. Turns out the vintage steel was just thicker and better made, so now I'm wondering if I should ditch the fancy stuff entirely or if that was pure luck. Anyone else found cheap tools that outwork the pricey ones?
