The 6am drywall lesson in Akron that fixed my sanding routine

I spent two years sanding drywall just enough to pass the light check, then a painter in Akron asked why my corners looked fuzzy from across the room. Turns out I was using 120 grit the whole time when 180 on the final pass does the job in half the strokes. He timed me on a 12 foot wall, 14 minutes versus my usual 30, and the finish was visibly cleaner. Anyone else had a pro point out a basic step you skipped for ages?

Hold up, 120 grit to 180 made that big of a difference? I mean, I get that finer grit works better for finish, but half the time? That's wild. I've been doing 120 then hitting it with 220 for like, forever, thinking I was being thorough. Maybe it's just me, but I always figured more passes meant more control, not that I was actually making it worse. That painter basically saved you two years of your life with one demo, that's crazy to think about.
