Found a hack for ending debate on character motivations in my book club last week

I started pointing out specific page numbers for key scenes and it shut down the 'but I think the author meant X' arguments in about 10 minutes flat, has anyone else tried this approach?

oh man, the page number trick is solid. i do that too and it kills those "well that's just your interpretation" convos real quick. keeps everyone honest without turning it into a debate club lol.

Ha, yeah the page number thing is a game changer! I did it at my book club last month and it was like magic how fast people backed down. Nothing shuts up a "but the author totally meant" argument like flipping straight to chapter 4.
