Heard my neighbor say she skips every chapter with weather descriptions and I feel attacked

I was watering my plants last weekend and my neighbor came over to borrow a rake. We got talking about book club and she said she skips any paragraph that describes the sky or the temperature. She said she's read 15 books this year like that. I mean I get it if the author goes on for two pages about a sunset but she said she skips it even if it's just a line or two. I feel like that's cheating or something but maybe I'm just slow for reading every word. Has anyone else noticed people doing this in your group?

Honestly I wonder if skipping weather descriptions means they're also missing context about seasons or time passing that the author intentionally built. Like maybe the fog means something ominous or the heat wave explains why characters are acting irritable. Feels like those details could be a quiet way of setting up a mood or a plot point later on.

Used to skip right past weather paragraphs honestly. Thought they were just fluff or the author padding the word count. But you're totally right about the heat wave thing, I remember reading this one book where it was super hot for like a week straight and everyone was on edge and snapping at each other. Totally missed that the weather was literally driving the conflict the first time through. The fog detail too, yeah, that's a big one, I can think of a couple horror stories where fog rolls in right before something bad happens and it sets this whole uneasy mood. Definitely gonna start paying more attention now.

My friend Sarah was reading that book "The Night Circus" and skipped all the weather parts. Then she got to the end and was confused about why everyone was acting so weird and why the circus felt off. I had to explain that the descriptions of the cold air and the changing seasons were literally hinting at some magical time loop thing happening. She was so mad at herself for breezing past it. Now she reads weather paragraphs out loud just to make sure she catches the clues. It's funny how those little details can be the whole backbone of a story and we just treat them like background noise.
