Historical fiction vs contemporary retelling, we picked wrong twice

Our club did two months of the same war story, one as a 2019 modern take and one as a 1985 classic, and the old one blew it away in every debate we had. The modern version kept adding side plots that muddied the core, while the classic stayed tight and hit way harder emotionally. Anyone else stuck with the newer book first and found the older one made your whole discussion better?
