I finally figured out how to keep our book club from turning every pick into a two hour fight
Our club kept getting stuck because whoever picked the book would get weirdly defensive when people ripped it apart. I started writing two questions on index cards before each meeting, one about what the author was going for and one about what didn't work, and now we argue about the book instead of about each other. Took me about four meetings of getting this wrong to land on it, and the first card swap in January ran 40 minutes shorter. The trick is reading the questions out loud at the start so nobody feels ambushed later. What does your club do to keep things from getting personal when someone hates the pick?
