My book club defended the villain in 'Wuthering Heights', but I can't forgive his cruelty.
Heathcliff's actions caused too much pain (and yes, I know he had a hard life), but no tragic backstory excuses that, in my view.

Wait, but judging him as real is how we see he's broken. The story shows his pain turned him cruel. That's the whole tragic point.

@knight.felix, judging Heathcliff like a real person might miss how Bronte used him to show wild feelings. He's more like a force of nature than a guy next door. Seeing him that way helps us get why he does such awful things. It's not about hating him, but understanding the story's dark heart. That view makes the book hit harder.
