My book club devolved into arguing over a single character's motivation for 45 minutes straight.

We spent nearly an hour debating if the main character was selfish or just broken, and nobody changed their mind. Has anyone else had a book club discussion spiral into a total standoff like that?

Think about how often people argue just to argue, not to actually listen.

Well, I'm not so sure people are always arguing just to argue. Sometimes they're just so set in their own view they can't see the other side, and that's different from wanting a fight for the sake of it.

Totally with you on that, some folks just can't step back and see it from another angle.
