My book club leader in Phoenix told me to skip chapters 3 through 6 and I actually listened
Last month our club read a 480 page novel and Dana (she runs the group out of her garage in Phoenix) told me the middle section drags and to just skip to chapter 7. I did it and still followed the whole plot, so I finished in two nights while everyone else was still grinding through week three. Now I am wondering if I missed something important, because two people said chapter 5 was their favorite part. Has anyone else skipped a chunk of a book club pick and gotten away with it, or did it blow up on you at the meeting?
A buddy of mine tried this with a 600 page history book his group picked, and the leader told him to skip the whole war section in the middle. He bragged about finishing early too, right up until the meeting, when someone asked what he thought about a letter the main guy writes to his dying brother in chapter 9. Turns out that letter only makes sense if you read the war part, since the brother was there with him. He sat there nodding along and faking it for an hour, then had to admit he skipped it. The group was cool about it, but he said he felt like a fraud and never did it again. Chapter 5 being two people's favorite part is a red flag for you, because favorite parts are usually where the big feelings or twists live. You might want to skim those chapters before the meeting, just so you can actually talk about them.
