My book club's 40 page limit rule saved our group

We used to let anyone pick anything and half the group showed up without reading, so now we cap picks at 40 pages and choose together. The difference is night and day, last month we actually argued about a character's motive for a solid 20 minutes, has anyone else tried a page cap or did your group fight it hard?

Man, 40 pages sounds less like a book club and more like a book study group for middle schoolers. I get that people flake, but at some point you're just reading a pamphlet together, not a book. Did nobody push back on that or did they all just nod along? Honestly, I'd be bored out of my mind. Half the time the good stuff doesn't even start until page 50 or 100. You're basically arguing about the setup, not the actual story. But if it works for your group and people are actually showing up, then hey, you do you. I just think there's a middle ground between nobody reading and reading a children's picture book.
