Way too heated" just means people actually cared about the books.

Exactly, when you say "people actually cared" that's the whole point. I got into a huge fight with my cousin over the ending of a book series last year. We were yelling in the living room about character choices for an hour. @betty_wells is right, that heat just shows how much those stories matter to us. It's way better than everyone just shrugging and moving on.

Remember when book arguments used to be about the actual story? My friend's book club fell apart because two members nearly came to blows over whether to meet on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. They spent three emails debating the "sanctity of weeknight routines" and never even picked a book. Sometimes the fight isn't about the thing you think it's about.

Is there any situation where a book club that never picks a book can actually be called a book club? Because I'd argue that's just a social group with a grudge. The Tuesday-Wednesday battle sounds like the real novel those folks were deep into. My money's on Tuesday holding the grudge longer.
