Overheard my book club say I only pick 'safe' books and it stung

I was grabbing coffee before our last meeting and caught two members whispering about how I never choose anything "risky." They said I stick to bestsellers and avoid anything challenging. Made me realize I do play it too safe with my picks. Anyone else get called out for their book choices in a way that made you rethink your whole approach?

Why does "safe" have to be such a bad thing when you're just picking books you know you'll enjoy? Popular books get popular for a reason, and that reason is usually solid storytelling. It might sting now, but you're not hurting anyone by reading what you like.

Gently nudge that calling bestsellers "safe" kinda misses how some popular books actually tackle heavy stuff.
