That one guy at my book club who hated every character
We read „The Underground Railroad” last month and this one member, Dave, spent the whole meeting saying how he couldn't connect with any of the characters. He said Cora felt 'too passive' and that the narrative style kept him at arm's length. I kept quiet but it bothered me for days because I felt the opposite. Has anyone else had a fellow club member totally miss the point of a book you loved?

27 days it took me to realize Dave was kinda right about some books. But The Underground Railroad? Nah, Cora wasn't passive she was surviving. I used to be the person who needed to like every character to enjoy a story, but this book totally shifted how I see that.

Right? Like every character has to be some hero for the story to work.

Surviving is kind of the bare minimum though. I just got tired of watching Cora get bounced around by every new person she met while barely making a choice for herself until the very end. The book is great, don't get me wrong, but I think we can call a character passive and still respect their struggle.
