That one member who said my character choice was shallow really got under my skin.

She kept pushing that a character has to be morally gray to be interesting, but I just loved how my pick handled grief with simple kindness and it made me wonder why we confuse complexity with depth in book club picks.

Shut down that debate by saying your pick works for you, period.

Kind of depends though. Saying something just works for you isn't really shutting down the debate it's just ending your part of it. The other person still thinks their pick is better and nothing got resolved. A better move is to actually point out why your choice fits your specific setup or situation. Like for me I went with the midrange drill because I have a small workshop and don't need pro torque every day. That's a real reason not just a vibe. Plus if you just say "it works for me" without explaining the context you come off as stubborn. People respect a straight up comparison more even if they still disagree.

You shut down that debate by saying your pick works for you, period" - okay but what if the person you're talking to is the type who won't let it go? I've had people keep pushing even after I said something works for me, like they need me to admit their way is better or something. So how do you actually handle that moment when they come back with "well mine is cheaper and has more torque"? Just repeat yourself again? That's not really shutting it down, that's just waiting for them to get bored.
