That stat about 93% of book club members faking their reading really got me

I dug into a survey from BookBrowse last week and found out almost everyone in my group just skims the wiki before meetings lol. Has anyone else caught people bluffing their way through a discussion?

Whoa, wait, your cousin literally sat through a whole conversation about gardening with a completely wrong book and just nodded along to "the dirt stuff" for thirty minutes? That is both hilarious and genuinely impressive in a weird way. I mean, I've definitely pretended to remember more than I did during discussions, but showing up with a whole different genre and just rolling with it takes some serious guts. Your book club friends must have been trying so hard not to crack up the whole time.

... and then there's my cousin who actually showed up to book club with a copy of the wrong book, some random thriller, while we were supposed to be discussing a memoir about gardening. She just nodded along the whole time and kept saying "yeah the dirt stuff was really something." We didn't have the heart to tell her until like thirty minutes in.

Gotta defend the cousin here - at least she showed up and tried to participate, which is more than half the people who say they'll come to book club actually do. Reading the wrong book and pretending to follow along takes some serious commitment to not being rude, you know? Honestly I've been in enough book clubs where people bring up random tangents anyway, so her nodding along to "dirt stuff" probably fit right in more than anyone wants to admit.
