That time I brought the wrong book to book club and had to fake my way through 45 minutes of discussion

We were meeting at Sarah's place downtown and I grabbed my copy of The Martian instead of the actual book we were debating (some dense literary fiction about a family farm) so I just started talking about how the protagonist's survival instincts mirrored real life problem solving and somehow nobody noticed until I slipped up and mentioned a potato.

Yeah @henryp40, you're totally right, that farm novel probably would have dragged on for hours anyway. I mean, have you ever heard anyone actually get excited about a book centered on crop rotation and generational trauma? The Martian had actual stakes, like oxygen running out and a guy figuring out how to survive on a dead planet. Honestly, you probably did everyone a favor by accident, because now they know what a real page-turner feels like. Maybe next time you can bring "Project Hail Mary" and see if they even notice the swap again.

Yeah but "The Martian" is way better than some boring farm novel so you actually improved the meeting.

Maybe it's just me but I can actually see why someone would be bummed about that. Sounds like you accidentally saved them from a really tough slog.
