The little indie bookshop near me closed down and a chain took its place

I walked past my old favorite spot on Elm Street last week, the one called Page Turners that had been there since the 90s. It's now a generic store with the same bestseller tables every other chain has, and the new manager told me they don't do special orders for local authors anymore. There was this one shelf in the back of Page Turners where they kept signed copies from writers in our town, and I probably bought 30 books from that spot over the years. Has anyone else watched a place they loved get swallowed up by a big chain and felt like something just got lost?

That special ordering for local authors thing is gone now too. What kind of indie places let that slide?

@murphy.aaron asking them directly worked for me once...

Noticed that everywhere now, honestly (like how my local bakery stopped doing custom cake orders last month).
