Tried reading the last chapter first to see if it changed my whole opinion on a book club pick
Did that with 'The Maid' last week and it actually made me hate the ending more instead of less, has anyone else found a weird reading hack that backfired?

Did you try flipping back to the middle of the book after reading the ending? That's what I do now when I'm curious about a book club pick. I read a couple random chapters in the middle first, then the last chapter. That way I get a feel for the writing style and the general story arc without spoiling the whole payoff. For 'The Maid' I think reading the last chapter alone would just highlight how the author wraps things up, which might not work out of context.

That's rough. Reading the last chapter first can really mess with your head sometimes. I tried that trick with a thriller and it just made the whole thing feel flat because I already knew who did it. The middle chapters trick sounds interesting but I worry it would ruin the flow too. Sometimes you just gotta trust the book and read it front to back even if you're curious.

Yeah the middle chapter thing is smarter than just jumping to the end blind. Reading a few random bits in the middle gives you the flavor of the writing without wrecking the whole story for you. It's like test driving a car before you buy it, you want to know how it handles but you don't need to see the final destination.
